Rio Ferdinand urges Man Utd transfer target to force his way out of current club

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is focused on rebuilding the roster after their horrible finish in the Premier League last season. The Portuguese is keen to add attacking reinforcements this summer after they struggled for goals.

The Red Devils have already signed Wolves star Matheus Cunha and are close to snapping up Brentford forward Bryan Mbuemo. However, they still need a prolific striker to lead the lines and Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres is Amorim's preferred option.

However, the Swedish marksman has had some trouble in recent days with Sporting president, Frederico Varandas proving to a big obstacle for the 27-year-old in moving out of Lisbon.

Earlier it was reported that the striker had some gentlemen's agreement in place with the club which would allow him to leave Sporting for a transfer fee around £59million. However, Varandas has completely rubbished such claims.

He remains rigid with his stance of asking £85 million transfer fee for the Swedish striker. He has also accused Gyokeres and his agent of blackmails. Varandas' reaction has irked Gyokeres, who has removed Sporting's name from his social media handles.

Former Manchester United defender and pundit, Rio Ferdinand has a unique suggestion for the Sweden International. He has urged Gyokeres to push for a move out of Sporting, taking inspiration from Ferdinand in 2002 when he moved from Leeds to Manchester United.

"I'll tell you one thing, I'd be in his (Varandas') office and he wouldn't be able to leave. I'd be in his bed, in his front room, his kitchen. He wouldn't be able to get me out of his sight," Ferdinand told talkSPORT.

"I'd be causing him a nightmare to get out if we had an agreement. I did that at Leeds. I heard Man United were interested in me and I knew Leeds had to let me go.

"I went to Peter Ridsdale and said ‘listen, I know you need to sell me, let's not haggle over a couple of million here or there. Get a deal done'.

"I was there for hours waiting and he ended up getting the deal done."

What did Ferdinand say about Gyokeres?

Ferdinand isn't sure Gyokeres is the right player to flourish at Old Trafford despite his exceptional goalscoring record for Sporting CP. He has netted 97 goals in 102 games for the Portuguese champions.

He admits that he hasn't seen enough of the 27-year-old but feels that Victor Osimhen could be the right kind of player for Amorim's system. He values the experience that Osimhen brings of playing andd flourishing in different leagues across Europe.

"I think he has some really good attributes. I've not seen enough of him to be totally convinced. The games I have seen him in in the Champions League agaist players that match him up physically, I think I'd love to see a bit more."

"But there's no denying that he knows where the goal is. In Portugal, he's been banging in goals and setting up goals left, right and centre over the last couple of years.

"For Manchester United at this period in time, I would go for experience and someone like Osimhen. He's experienced, played in multiple leagues and produced at every level he's played at. I'd go for him."
