John Terry doesn't regret wearing full kit for Champions League despite getting 'stick'
John Terry doesn’t regret wearing his full kit to celebrate the 2012 Champions League when he didn’t even play and would “do it again”.
The former Chelsea club captain, 44, said he’s “taken the full brunt” of mocking but doesn’t care. He was mocked for wearing his strip to celebrate them lifting the trophy in 2012 despite being suspended and not taking part in the game.
But the ex-England star said: “I’ve taken the full brunt of this! I absolutely don’t regret wearing it. I was in full kit: boots, shinpads, captain’s armband – the lot. And I’d do it again.”
Terry became an internet sensation after rocking onto the pitch to join team-mates in his Chelsea clobber after they beat Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final.
Tonnes of memes then went viral on social media showing the Stamford Bridge involved in other events he had no part in. Terry has been edited celebrating the first ever moon landing and Usain Bolt’s 100 metre gold medal win.
He told FourFourTwo: “I’ve taken the full brunt of this! I absolutely don’t regret wearing it. And people need to know: we had a letter from UEFA about it.
"When Man United won it in 1999, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were suspended and wore suits to the game.
“UEFA didn’t like that. Their direct message to us was that every player, regardless of whether they were in the team that night, had to be in full kit.
"Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferrera were also suspended and they did it, too. But I take the stick, as always. I was in full kit: boots, shinpads, captain’s armband – the lot. And I’d do it again.”
He has confessed it wasn’t his first rodeo as said he was also left wandering the streets of Cardiff in the clobber after leaving hospital when he was injured in the 2007 League Cup final.
The no-nonsense defender said he had it on as he discharged himself from hospital after being battered in their 2007 League Cup final clash with Arsenal.
Terry said: “On the way to the hospital, in full kit in the back of an ambulance, I had no idea where I was.
"I had to have a brain scan, but then I ignored medical advice and checked myself straight out because we’d won the game and I wanted to celebrate with my team-mates.
“They reluctantly let me go – but, whenever that happens, they refuse to arrange travel. So I wandered out, still in my kit, to a taxi rank in Cardiff and asked for a lift back to the stadium. God knows what the cabbie made of it.”
