Ruben Amorim linked with new role following Manchester United departure

Ruben Amorim hasn’t been out of work for long, as he could be on his way back into management after being sacked by Manchester United following a 14-month stint at Old Trafford.

It’s the end of the road for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, but the 40-year-old manager will look to get back on track at another club in the future.

Amorim didn’t produce the results needed to find success at Old Trafford. In his first season, United finished 15th in the Premier League and missed out on Champions League football after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

The past 14 months have been tough, and it may impact how he’s seen in England. However, it’s important to remember that before moving to Manchester United, Amorim led Sporting CP to two league titles in Portugal. His tactical approach faced far less criticism back home than it did during his time in England.

In the meantime, Michael Carrick has been appointed as interim head coach until a permanent replacement is found. The 44-year-old has been handed a short-term contract with a clear aim: keep things stable and secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Benfica considering Ruben Amorim as Mourinho replacement

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is under pressure at Benfica after a tough season.

Benfica are also on track to finish the season without any silverware, having been eliminated from both the Portuguese Cup and League Cup.

They currently sit third in the league, 10 points behind leaders Porto.

Rudy Galetti has reported that Mourinho could be in line for a return to Real Madrid, with Amorim seen as a strong candidate to replace him at Benfica.

Galetti posted on X: “Among the names being considered by Real Madrid for next season there is also Jose Mourinho.”

“Benfica would not block a possible exit, and in that case, Ruben Amorim is at the top of their shortlist as a replacement. Situation to monitor with attention.”

A move back to Portugal could make sense for Amorim, but he might prefer another go outside of his home country, even though things didn’t quite click in England.

This isn’t the first time Benfica have shown interest in bringing him on board.

Ruben Amorim’s history with Benfica

Amorim spent the majority of his playing career at Benfica, a club where he won three Primeira Liga titles and five League Cups. He left in 2017 after nine years, during which he made over 100 appearances and earned 14 caps for Portugal.

Amorim is one of several names on their shortlist, but not necessarily the leading candidate. Other options may also have stronger backing from key figures within the club’s hierarchy.

His background as both a player and coach makes him a logical fit for the job, but it remains to be seen if Benfica will opt to bring him back or look elsewhere.
