Kobbie Mainoo’s Everton debut gave Man Utd more than Garnacho’s goal ever did
Kobbie Mainoo’s first Premier League start for Manchester United came against Everton, a game that would mark the beginning of his rise into the first team.
That opportunity came back in 2023, and it was one he certainly made the most of, showing confidence and maturity that belied his age.
As United prepare to face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time next week, it feels like a perfect time to revisit what was an incredibly important game.
The match ended in a 3-0 win for United. Even though Alejandro Garnacho stole most of the headlines with his early goal, Mainoo’s solid display didn’t go unnoticed by those paying closer attention.
Alejandro Garnacho scored a stunning overhead kick which has since been voted United’s best ever goal of the season contender.
Kobbie Mainoo’s full debut aged better than Garnacho
Garnacho’s goal was worthy of every highlight reel, but what followed in his United career means that he has quickly been forgotten by the fanbase.
While Garnacho made the switch to Chelsea in a move that burned bridges at Old Trafford, Mainoo worked his way back into favour and is now a regular under Michael Carrick.
Mainoo’s debut against Everton was described as “industrious” and “superb” by 90Min, and despite Garnacho’s spectacular finish, Mainoo actually received the higher match rating.
Looking back on that day at Goodison Park, it feels like history might end up giving equal weight to both moments — not just the wonder goal but also the start of Mainoo’s journey.
Kobbie Mainoo’s history with Everton
Mainoo first full start in the Premier League came against the Toffees in 2023, and ever since he has always enjoyed playing the Merseyside club.
In four appearances against Everton, Mainoo has been on the winning side three times. The only defeat came this season when United lost 1-0 to Everton despite the Toffees going down to 10 men.
But Mainoo was only brought into that game by Amorim as a second-half substitute. Impressively, he boasts a 100% winning record as a starter against Everton.
To add to that record, United have kept a clean sheet in all three of the wins against Everton that Mainoo has started in, with an overall goal record of 9-0 in those matches.
If United weren’t confident enough already for their trip to face Everton, Mainoo’s record should inspire some positivity about picking up three points.
